Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025, was a tireless advocate of nonviolence as a path to peace. In his message for the 2017 World Day of Peace, he stated that nonviolence is “a typical example of a universal value found in the Gospel of Christ,” and proposed adopting it as a way of life in all areas—from the family to politics and international relations. In 2023, he reiterated that “to live, speak, and act without violence is not to surrender, not to lose or give up anything. It is to aspire to everything,” underscoring his commitment to a culture of peace.
